Makeup Quiz: FREE Personalized Makeup Guides

Just a few years ago, I was sitting, staring into a mirror at my grandmother’s house, with a foundation brush in my right hand. Unbeknownst to me, this was the moment I fell in love with makeup. For full transparency, I did not know what a “foundation brush” was, nor did I know what I was doing; neither did my grandma, but did we have fun! All I knew at that moment was that something so simple, a brush (which I was convinced was meant for painting art galleries and clown makeup) could bring such a smile to my face.

In the beginning, I was a hot mess! Whatever powder, lipstick, or cream my grandma had in her collection, I grabbed. The sky was the limit; three blushes, two eyeshadows, and lipstick from dimple to dimple (why not!). In time, and after several conversations of me wasting all of my grandma’s makeup, I started to learn the process and the correct way of applying each and every layer.

During this time, it hit me; if only there was a resource, a makeup quiz or makeup guide, that could not only show me the steps of applying makeup but recommended products to start off with. Keep in mind, I know the answer nowadays is TikTok or YouTube, but during 2006, all we had was trial and error. I learned a lot since 2006 and that same thought I had over 17 years ago hit me; are there any makeup quizzes or guides to help others going through what I went through so long ago? The answer was no!

Being the “tech-savvy queen” that I am (NOT), I grabbed my husband and simply said, “Makeup quiz, now!” I will be honest, the word “now” ended up being 2 months, but I am proud to say, the quiz was completed. It had to be perfect; typical Simply Beauty Blog style! Every product, every step, for every skin type and occasion – this makeup quiz could not have been put together any better!

Down below, you will find my first Makeup Quiz! Answer the questions to the best of your ability and your skin type will be matched to a personalized makeup guide. How crazy is that?!

Makeup Quiz | How Is This Different Than the Rest?

The Simply Beauty Blog makeup quiz helps match personalized recommendations for your skin types! Through a series of questions, the makeup quiz gets to understand what skin type you have to showcase the correct guide that fits your very needs. Not only does this makeup quiz take into account your particular skin type, but I have laid out a step-by-step makeup guide on what products you should definitely use, when, and in what order. Usually, other makeup quizzes, simply help with shade matching a particular product or helping to choose one product out of a product line; here on this makeup quiz, I put in the work to give you the entire spectrum!

Back in 2006, this is EXACTLY what I needed… help! So many products to choose from for so many occasions, not even understanding how they work / affect my skin type. Trust me, back then, my skin was very confused, just like I was, because the sheer amount of products being put on it was iconically high! I could definitely continue on how this makeup quiz is going to bring a level of personalized makeup guides to you, that rivals the all the options out there, but I want you to see it for yourself. Please click on the button below and get ready to look fabulous!

Just to let you know, there are two versions: Glam and Natural makeup. If you fill out the quiz twice, changing your first answer choice, you can receive two guides for either situation đź’•

Makeup Quiz | My Personalized Makeup Guides

The day is finally here and I can’t possibly be more excited! I started this blog as a way for me to talk about one of my favorite things in the world: all things beauty. As you can hopefully tell by now, I love beauty so much and it is intertwined in almost everything I do. I love makeup because of how creative it makes me, how confident it makes me feel, and it’s just so much fun to play around with it and try new products.

One day, we were brainstorming about what we can do to make this blog different. I knew that although I can write about makeup and all things beauty until my fingers fall off, I wanted to also do something different with this blog and to really interact with our followers and viewers.

After searching my mind for ideas, I finally thought of exactly what this blog needed. Personalized Makeup Guides! In this post, I’ll share with you guys exactly what I created and I’ll also explain how to get access to them too.

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I have oily skin. I’ve always had oily skin and I feel that Florida weather doesn’t do it any justice whatsoever. Having oily skin, I hated how after a few hours into the day my makeup would start looking greasy and look as though it’s just melting off of my face. After those few hours passed, I would look like a straight-up oil slick. In order to combat that, I started using super magnifying touch-up powders throughout the day and blotting sheets. Sure, those worked, but it was just still so annoying how after a few hours my face would just be so oily and I had to do extra touch-ups. Those were basically all temporary solutions to a problem that I was hoping wouldn’t become permanent.

I started doing tons of research; stumbling upon the standard solutions and trying them all. No moisturizer in the morning before makeup, mattifying primers, mattifying foundations, I’ve tried basically all of it. Mattifying primers and foundations work but after a few hours, the oils would just start peeking through my makeup.

“Oily Skin is just SO frustrating!”

UNTIL! One day, I tried a hack that just changed my makeup game completely. I know it seems dramatic, but honestly, I am so sure of this hack and I can assure you it works. Before using this technique, I wouldn’t be able to go 2 hours without any touch ups, but now, I can go up to 8 hours without even a trace of oil on my face! HOW AMAZING?!

Are you ready for this SIMPLE way to change your makeup?! To make it last ALL DAY with NO SHINE?!? (I’m so excited to share this tip!) It may seem a little odd at first, but trust me, it’s revolutionary for any of us that have oily skin and need a little extra help throughout the day. Okay, enough hype and rambling, it’s time to transform your makeup game!

Steps to Reduce and Maintain Oily Skin

Step 1:

When I do my makeup, my first step is always a primer. It was definitely a step that I used to skip before, but now I can’t go a day without it. There’s many primers out there with each one catering to your specific needs. Since I have oily skin, I tend to gravitate toward the mattifying primers and pore minimizing ones as my base before my foundation.

Step 2:

Next, after I apply my primer I take my damp beauty blender and dip it into my loose powder. After getting a good amount of loose powder on the sponge, I tap it all over my face. Yes, right over my primer! I apply it over my entire face, forehead, basically everywhere. I add a good amount but definitely not too much. One way to tell that you applied enough powder in this step is to touch your face when you’re done applying it and it should feel like soft velvet. You’ll know you applied too much powder if you can feel it coming off when you touch your face! Your skin should literally feel like a thin layer of smooth velvet.

Step 3:

Once you have your layer of loose powder applied all over your primer, apply your favorite foundation and concealer! Then, set your makeup as normal, and your base is good to go for the entire day. Yes, I really do mean ALL DAY.

The beauty of this step cannot be described in words, but, I’m going to try. First, let’s start with the most obvious. This two second step makes your entire makeup last all day! There’s no need to even take any blotting powder with you anywhere you go, because your face will just be shine and oil-free. You don’t have to worry about checking the mirrors to see if your face looks good, because it will! The loose powder acts as a a barrier so that the oil can’t seep through it, working wonders underneath your foundation.

Another beautiful part of this step is that your foundation options are ENDLESS! You’re not limited to only using matte foundations and steering clear of illuminating ones. You can truly use any foundation that you choose! No need for any extra hassle finding a specific foundation that won’t make your skin oily all day.

“It’s Revolutionary!”

Sounds too good to be true right? Well honestly, it is! It’s wild to me how such a simple step in my makeup routine can just change my entire day. I can assure you that it works because I used to go to work and constantly take either touch up powder or blotting sheets to fix any issues throughout the day. AND! I always used a foundation that catered toward people with oily skin (which still ended up getting oily on me throughout the day).

Now, with this hack, I can even use an illuminating foundation that will give me a healthy dewy glow, all without becoming an oil slick! Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could wear an illuminating foundation without looking like I dipped my face into a tub of oil. But, we’ve made it to that day!

I hope you guys like this little makeup hack to make your makeup last all day, shine-free! It’s such a game-changer that has transformed my makeup ever since I started to use this technique! If I know I’m going to an event or to a place where I need my makeup flawless for the entire day, this is the trick that gets me through it all.

Have you ever tried this technique? Did you like it?! Do you have any tips for making your makeup last all day? Let us know in the comments below!

How Do I Fix My Cakey Makeup? Tips to Avoid Cakey Foundation! https://simplybeautyblog.com/articles-on-beauty/beauty-hacks/how-do-i-fix-my-cakey-makeup/ https://simplybeautyblog.com/articles-on-beauty/beauty-hacks/how-do-i-fix-my-cakey-makeup/#comments Tue, 03 Dec 2019 03:24:06 +0000 http://simplybeautyblog.com/?p=1771 I started to notice that makeup started to pile up on my nose. That had to be addressed quick and head on! Here's how to fix Cakey Makeup.

When I started to do my makeup, one thing that I began to notice was throughout the day, the makeup around my nose would begin to bunch up and just look so cakey. If you’re wondering what cakey means, it basically means that the makeup looks extra heavy as if it’s just sitting on top of your skin and bunching up instead of acting as a second layer of skin (not a cute look!). Thus, the name “Cakey Makeup” was born.

If you have any troubles with a cakey nose or cakey makeup in general, fear not! Down below, I showcase three steps on how I defeated this annoying issue; the examples apply specifically to my nose, however, the same principles and concepts can be applied anywhere on the face. Are you ready for my tips? Let’s get started!

Step 1: Before Applying Makeup, Exfoliate!

If there’s one tip that I feel really addressed the whole cakey-nose issue, I feel like it’s this one! Each time before I apply my makeup, I really like to exfoliate my nose. What does this do? Well, it’s a small step that can make a world of a difference. When you exfoliate your nose, you’re basically getting rid of any of the dead skin cells in that area and smoothing it out. I’ve found that when I exfoliate before I do my makeup, the products really just soak and absorb into my skin. This tip doesn’t just work with helping the makeup on your nose look better, but it really works for all of your face makeup in general!

With this tip, since I exfoliate my skin so often, it’s important to use an exfoliator that’s not too harsh on your skin so it doesn’t just strip your skin each time! My favorite exfoliator at the moment is the St. Ives Blackhead Clearing Green Tea Scrub. In my opinion, this exfoliator is very gentle on my skin so I can use it daily. Although it’s gentle, it still exfoliates my skin beautifully; this product just has the perfect balance of being gentle yet effective! It’s also pretty affordable and comes with a lot of products, where a little bit goes a long way!

The post How To Clean Makeup Brushes! appeared first on Simply Beauty Blog.

Washing Makeup Brushes always seems like such a daunting task. Too many scenarios and options that could drive anyone mad. So the question is… What’s the best affordable way to wash make up brushes? How to clean makeup brushes? It’s as simple as…

The answer: Baby Shampoo?

The best affordable way to wash make up brushes is baby shampoo? Hear me out… Lately I’ve been noticing that my makeup brushes are in need of a deep clean. I usually just use some warm water and an Elf brush cleaner that I bought from Target. However, that doesn’t seem to be doing the trick since I still see some makeup left over when they dry! I decided to do some research on the best at-home methods to deep clean my brushes. I kept seeing recommendations to use expensive brush shampoos until I stumbled upon something that peaked my interest: baby shampoo! Online it said that baby shampoo is very gentle so it doesn’t wear away at the glue of the brushes and it also is very gentle on the bristles as well; it sounded like a win/win to me.

I headed to my local Walgreens and bought two small bottles of baby shampoo to see if I found the newest way to clean my brushes. The website didn’t specify which specific one to use so I bought a basic head-to-toe baby shampoo. On the bottle it says the shampoo doesn’t contain parabens, phthalates, sulfates, or dyes so it seemed as though it would cleanse the bristles without damaging them. This is the shampoo:

The first thing I did was separate my brushes into 2 categories; face brushes and eye brushes. I took some close-up pictures of the brushes so that you can see what the brushes look like before cleaning.

Before Applying Baby Shampoo

The next thing I did was place the brushes in a sink with the drain closed and then I filled it up with warm water. I didn’t want the water to be too hot because I thought it would ruin the bristles and I didn’t want it to be too cold because it wouldn’t really clean the brushes. It was right in the middle 🙂

Next Step in the Process

I took the brushes one by one and ran them under the water with a drop of the baby shampoo, while swirling them on the palm of my hand. Not gonna lie, it was a little gross to swirl the foundation brushes because there was foundation everywhere. But, after a few extra drops of shampoo and swirls in my hand, all of the product was gone! Even the brushes with the most foundation or powder on them, were back to their original look.

I was honestly shocked to see how well the brushes were cleaned! The brush from the video is the brush that I use for my highlighter so it had a lot of product left in it and it was also stained. After a few swirls, it was as good as new! Here are the “after” pictures of the same brushes I posted in the beginning in the same order.

The brushes above were ~90% dry when I took the above pictures (I was too impatient!). By that point, I could feel that the bristles were all in tact, fluffy, and soft. One tip: Dry the brushes hanging off the edge of a counter/table so that the bristles can fall right back to their original shape.

Final thoughts: So what’s the Best Affordable way to wash Makeup Brushes? Johnson’s Baby Shampoo! The whole process was super easy and the amount of time it takes you depends on how much product is on the brush and how many brushes you have. With all my brushes, it took about 15 minutes to wash them. I definitely recommend this method and I’ll be stocking up on baby shampoo for my brushes 🙂

Have you tried this method on how to clean makeup brushes? Let me know down below how it went! <3

1) Before you start applying, use a Lash Curler

My first tip for the best mascara hacks (tips) for beautiful lashes is to use a Lash Curler. Yes, there are definitely tons of mascaras out there that claim to curl your lashes and make them longer and appear more full, however, the process starts way before you actually apply your mascara. When you use a Lash Curler on each eye for about 20-30 seconds, it really lifts and curls your lashes from the base all the way to the tip! It gets your lashes in the optimum position for maximum curl that your mascara will deliver.

A tip that I’ve found to using a Lash Curler is that it doesn’t have to only be used when applying makeup on top! On those days where I don’t have enough time to put a drop of makeup on and need to run out the door, I just use the Lash Curler to give my lashes a natural lift, instantly making it look like my eyes are more awake and open!

2) Next, use a Lash Primer!

As I mentioned in my post all about the ins and outs of how to get perfect long and voluminous natural lashes, the number one secret to having long lashes with volume and curl that last all day is a Lash Primer! For years, I didn’t think Lash Primer was necessary and that it was just an extra step in my makeup routine, however, it really WORKS! Just like primer for your face before you apply foundation, Lash Primer really gives your eyelashes that perfect base. They lift the lashes, condition them, and coat them so that when you apply mascara, you don’t use as much; alongside providing instant volume! Truly, my life changed when I began to use Lash Primer and I could not possibly recommend this step more. It’s a true game changer if you haven’t tried it out!

For my all time favorite lash primers, click here!

3) Mascara Smudges? Use DHC Olive Oil Swabs

This next product that I am recommending as part of the best mascara hacks (tips), is truly a life saver! For some reason, almost every time that I apply mascara, there just HAS to be some sort of transfer on the my eyelid. It’s so annoying! What’s even worse is that when I go to clean it up, it either messes up my lashes or just smears mascara all over my lid! For years, I would use a cotton swab, dip it in some makeup remover, and wipe it away. However, I found that using a cotton swab that close to my lashes tended to mess them up and also, didn’t work to well if I applied eye shadow before my mascara because it would mess up the shadows. But! Everything changed when I discovered this miracle product.

The product is small cotton swabs that are pre-moistened with olive oil! Before you think this product is just too weird, let me tell you that when I first heard about it my initial reaction was “no way!” I didn’t want to add any extra oil to my lids than I already had! However, these cotton swabs have the tiniest amount on them with just enough to clean up any mess that the mascara may have left on your eyelids. The best part? They’re so tiny and precise! It doesn’t matter where the smudge may be, these swabs are absolutely perfect for everything! They work not only to adjust any little mishaps with mascara, but they also work amazingly in adjusting your liquid eyeliner. They help to fix any smudges or mistakes and they can even be used to make the line more precise!

The last amazing things about these swabs is that they can even be used on top of your eye shadow if any mascara happens to smudge on it. They’re pre-moistened with just the right amount of oil to clean up any mess, all without making an additional mess! This product is a MUST HAVE!

4) For Dramatic, Voluminous Lashes with a Curl that lasts, Layer!

Next up on my best mascara hacks (tips) for long and voluminous lashes is to layer your mascara! I can’t even tell you the last day when I wore either one layer of mascara or one specific mascara, for that matter. I personally love a very lifted, full, and voluminous look when I apply my mascara. One of my top secrets for getting a false lash effect with my lashes every time is applying many layers (not too many, we don’t want clumpy lashes!) and also layering different types of mascaras. Certain mascaras work great to give you that curl and lift, but others work better on top to really lengthen and separate the lashes. Thus, I highly recommend finding out which mascaras work great for you, and next time you apply them, try to layer them and see what a difference it can make! For my all-time favorite mascaras that I swear by, click here!

5) To Avoid any Transfer under your Lower Lash Line, Bake!

One of my favorite things about mascara, is applying it on my lower lash line. I love applying many layers because it really gives the eye some definition, adds a little bit of drama, and lengthens your lower lashes! However, one huge pet peeve of mine that I’ve found over the years is when my lower lash mascara smudges underneath my eye. It’s truly THE WORST! If I try to clean it up and get rid of it, I would just ruin my face makeup underneath and it would be a mess every single time! So, I started to look up ways to avoid this annoying little issue and I’ve found the perfect solution! It all starts with baking! No, not baking a cake, but, baking your under eye area! How do you do this?

First, finish up your face makeup entirely. Foundation, bronzer, the whole 9-yards. Then, apply your upper mascara like you normally would. Next, before you apply your lower lash mascara, place a layer of your favorite loose setting powder underneath your eye. Trust me, although you’re applying this on top of your completed makeup, this won’t cause anything to crease or any weird cakey-ness! Now, all you do, is apply the mascara and allow it to dry while leaving the powder underneath. I typically leave it on for as long as I can, sometimes even during breakfast, just in case! When your lower lash mascara dries, just simply swipe off the powder, and ta-da, you’re going to be smudge free all day! This hack is probably one of my favorites within the best mascara hacks (tips) category because it’s just magical how a simple layer of powder can fix an issue that I’ve been struggling with for so long!
