Just a few years ago, I was sitting, staring into a mirror at my grandmother’s house, with a foundation brush in my right hand. Unbeknownst to me, this was the moment I fell in love with makeup. For full transparency, I did not know what a “foundation brush” was, nor did I know what I was doing; neither did my grandma, but did we have fun! All I knew at that moment was that something so simple, a brush (which I was convinced was meant for painting art galleries and clown makeup) could bring such a smile to my face.

In the beginning, I was a hot mess! Whatever powder, lipstick, or cream my grandma had in her collection, I grabbed. The sky was the limit; three blushes, two eyeshadows, and lipstick from dimple to dimple (why not!). In time, and after several conversations of me wasting all of my grandma’s makeup, I started to learn the process and the correct way of applying each and every layer.

During this time, it hit me; if only there was a resource, a makeup quiz or makeup guide, that could not only show me the steps of applying makeup but recommended products to start off with. Keep in mind, I know the answer nowadays is TikTok or YouTube, but during 2006, all we had was trial and error. I learned a lot since 2006 and that same thought I had over 17 years ago hit me; are there any makeup quizzes or guides to help others going through what I went through so long ago? The answer was no!

Being the “tech-savvy queen” that I am (NOT), I grabbed my husband and simply said, “Makeup quiz, now!” I will be honest, the word “now” ended up being 2 months, but I am proud to say, the quiz was completed. It had to be perfect; typical Simply Beauty Blog style! Every product, every step, for every skin type and occasion – this makeup quiz could not have been put together any better!

Makeup Quiz | How Is This Different Than the Rest?

The Simply Beauty Blog makeup quiz helps match personalized recommendations for your skin types! Through a series of questions, the makeup quiz gets to understand what skin type you have to showcase the correct guide that fits your very needs. Not only does this makeup quiz take into account your particular skin type, but I have laid out a step-by-step makeup guide on what products you should definitely use, when, and in what order. Usually, other makeup quizzes, simply help with shade matching a particular product or helping to choose one product out of a product line; here on this makeup quiz, I put in the work to give you the entire spectrum!

Back in 2006, this is EXACTLY what I needed… help! So many products to choose from for so many occasions, not even understanding how they work / affect my skin type. Trust me, back then, my skin was very confused, just like I was, because the sheer amount of products being put on it was iconically high! Makeup Quiz | My Personalized Makeup Guides

The day is finally here and I can’t possibly be more excited! I started this blog as a way for me to talk about one of my favorite things in the world: all things beauty. As you can hopefully tell by now, I love beauty so much and it is intertwined in almost everything I do. I love makeup because of how creative it makes me, how confident it makes me feel, and it’s just so much fun to play around with it and try new products.

One day, we were brainstorming about what we can do to make this blog different. I knew that although I can write about makeup and all things beauty until my fingers fall off, I wanted to also do something different with this blog and to really interact with our followers and viewers.

After searching my mind for ideas, I finally thought of exactly what this blog needed. Personalized Makeup Guides! In this post, I’ll share with you guys exactly what I created and I’ll also explain how to get access to them too.

Beauty Tips I Swear By

The beauty of makeup, at least one of them, is that it is an ever-evolving field of discovery with no rules (deep, I know!). Every time that I apply makeup, I tweak my routine a little and get a totally huge payoff that makes a world of a difference. Makeup has no rules, there is no set way to do a particular step, and there is always new things to discover and try out!

These beauty tips below that I’m about to share with you guys are makeup hacks (beauty tips) that make a world of a difference for me, at this precise moment; who knows if I won’t find another makeup hack tomorrow? Are you ready? Let’s get into it!

1) Beauty Tips for Flawless Foundation & Lashes: Primer (Face AND Lashes)

As I’ve mentioned a few times on this blog, I used to be super wary and skeptical when it came to primer. I didn’t want to waste money on yet another product that might just be useless. However, after I used face primer for the first time, the rest was absolute history! I used primer as a way to really make sure that my foundation sets in and lays perfectly on top of my skin, fill in my pores, and to also make my makeup last all day!

Since I have oily skin, my favorite primer BY FAR for the past few months has been the ELF Matte Putty Primer. Honestly, that product is such a heaven sent that at this point, my back-ups have their own back-ups! Click here to read my full review of the ELF Matte Putty Primer!

Another makeup hack (beauty tips) that totally changed the game for me is Eyelash Primer. If you love having long, voluminous, all-day lasting, natural lashes, you NEED eyelash primer! Eyelash primer basically has the same premise as a primer that you would use for your face. It just preps your , and it adds another layer of honestly, pure perfection. Ever since I started to use lash primer, I’ve never went back. And if you’re worried about the tint of the primer, don’t worry about it, it goes away the second you apply mascara on top! My favorite Lash Primers are the Essence Volume Booster Lash Primer and the L’Oreal Voluminous Lash Primer! Both are absolutely GORGEOUS and game-changing to your mascara routine!

2) Beauty Tips for Smooth Skin (Under Makeup or On its Own!): Exfoliation

Beauty tips that have really changed the makeup game for me surrounds skin care. I know, skin care is all the rage right now, but it honestly is worth all of the hype that it gets. Skin care, in my opinion, is just as important as your actual makeup because it makes it look SO much better! When you take care of your skin and prep it, your makeup lays down so much nicer on top and the overall look is a lot more natural and seamless.

Although there are many steps in skin care that I think are necessary, one of my top favorite beauty tips when it comes to my routine is using an exfoliator. Exfoliator’s really smooth out my skin, un-clog my pores, and make my skin feel super smooth. I typically exfoliate with a gentle one every evening, and when my skin is feeling super congested I use a stronger one about once or twice a week to get super smooth and clean skin. My favorite daily exfoliator is the Biore Charcoal Acne Scrub, and my favorite once a week deep exfoliator is The Ordinary AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution. Both of those products are equally as amazing and really have upped my makeup-game tremendously!!

3) Beauty Tips to Have Flawless Makeup on Your Nose: Nose Strips

I don’t know about you, but one of the top issues that I tend to have with my foundation is that it just doesn’t look as flawless as I would like on my nose. I’ve tried everything; powder before, less foundation, more foundation, different beauty tools, you name it. Nothing really worked as great as the makeup hack (beauty tips) that I’m about to share with you.

What was this super easy fix to all of my worries? Nose strips!! How so? Let me explain! When you use a nose strip, it basically strips away any blackheads that you may have on your nose that you might not even know that are there. After it works its magic, your nose is super smooth and it doesn’t really have much texture to it. So, when it comes time to apply your nose makeup, it goes on super smooth and your foundation literally just melts into your skin and blends with no problems!

Plus, nose strips are perfect for a day of self-care pampering! I like to use them a few times a week, or when I feel like I notice I have some blackheads or texture. My favorite strips to use are the Biore Charcoal Deep Cleansing Nose Strips!

Although I’ve always been a makeup lover, I didn’t think I had a makeup addiction until it came time to pack for my move. Last year, I moved from Miami to Orlando and there is nothing like good old fashioned packing to really put the amount of stuff you have into perspective! After going through all of my makeup and throwing away all of the products I won’t ever really use again, I still had just too much to fit into one little organizer. Hence, the beginning of looking into the best way to organize your makeup!

So, after moving into our new apartment I realized that I needed a true organizing system for my makeup so that it not only can look nice, but so that it can all be displayed in a way which will allow me to see what products I truly have! Think about it, if your makeup products and skin care is stowed away in a cabinet, you won’t really know what you have. This equals to products just sitting there until it’s time for them to be thrown out. *insert sad face here!*

Before going shopping, I gathered all of my ideas and made some sense of what my ideal makeup organizing unit would look like; the best way to organize your makeup! I wanted the unit to be acrylic with drawers, look nice (since it was going to be on display in our bathroom), and deep enough to fit all of my makeup. While I was looking for a new makeup organizer, I was honestly getting a little frustrated. Every where I looked, organizers would either be too big, too small, not acrylic, or just plain ugly! Until, I stumbled upon a store that was a total game changer for me. What store was that? The holy grail of organizing, of course. It was the Container Store!

There is just something about the Container store where I feel a total sense of peace because of it’s organization. Truly, I may not need anything from there but if I see a store, I’ll walk in just to get some joy from the aisles. (Am I the only one?!) Anywho, back to our organizer. The store is full of many options to pick from. They have larger units, smaller units, colorful units, and they have units that are already pre-assembled and ready to go. Although the organizers that were already assembled in the store looked nice, they weren’t exactly ideal for me because I had a specific vision in mind.

For me, I wanted an organizer that had 1 big and deep drawer to fit all of my makeup palettes. In addition, I wanted a separate drawer for all my liquid foundations/primers, and a drawer for my powder products. Lastly, I wanted a section on the top of the unit for all of my makeup brushes, perfumes, and mascaras. I wanted this organizer to be pretty grand, to display all of my makeup in a way that made sense when it came to storage, as well as make sure that I can actually see what products are being stored there.

After a few trips to the Container Store, I started to lose a little hope because I couldn’t really make up my mind about the last few pieces to go at the top of the unit. I kept putting the organizer in the back of my mind, and told myself I’ll tackle it later. Until, it was my birthday. Daniel surprised me with the makeup organizing unit of my dreams! He honestly took my thoughts and feedback from every Container Store trip (I’m sorry babe) and he put all of my ideas together into the perfect unit. I was freaking out on the inside and I just couldn’t wait to get home to organize my makeup. Fast forward to today, I literally get JOY from going into our bathroom and seeing the beauty of my makeup being all organized.

In this post, I’ll show you guys what units worked for my unit. As I mentioned, I had a pretty specific vision in mind so the units that were ideal for me may not be the best option for your organizer. But, don’t you worry, the Container Store has TONS of options so that you can also organize your makeup and make the storage unit of your DREAMS!

• The way I organized my Unit (from top to bottom):
  
  • Base: Large Acrylic Drawer
  • 2 x Medium Acrylic Drawer’s (I can’t find this one online for some reason!)
  • Brush Organizer
  • Drawer Insert (For perfume, lipsticks, etc.)

How to Get Rid of Oily Hair: Background

I personally hate when my hair gets oily. I know it’s a good thing for my overall hair health when there’s extra oils (or something like that?), but I truly DESPISE when my hair is greasy. Whenever my hair is greasy, even in the slightest bit, it literally throws my mood off and I don’t even feel confident whatsoever. Crazy how something as simple as hair can have such an effect on me, but I’m hoping I’m not the only one.

Thus, to deal with my greasy hair, I did what anyone would do with the same issue. Wash it! It came to a point where I was literally washing my hair every other day, and sometimes I didn’t even leave that day space in between. I noticed that since I washing my hair so often, it ended up being dry and not as silky as it always was. It lacked shine, volume, and basically even looked sort of lifeless. After some research, I actually found that washing your hair does in fact dry your hair out! When you wash your hair less often, it helps to preserve the natural oils that are produced in your scalp and it keeps your hair moisturized. So, when you wash it, it strips away your natural oils.

So, I decided to try out other things to keep my hair feeling clean without actually washing it. I tried out NUMEROUS different types of dry shampoos. Which, some were great but some just left my hair feeling chalky and gross. I tried to be a trooper and not wash my hair (only with water on some days), but it was honestly so tough. Until one day, I was getting a hair cut and my hairdresser gave me a tip which was just the be-all end-all answer to all of my questions and concerns.

How to Get Rid of Oily Hair: Use This!

The answer is simple and it all starts with … Conditioner! If I told you that my favorite thing about washing my hair isn’t conditioner, I’d be lying. I love how silky smooth conditioner makes my hair feel and just how soft it feels. I’m for sure guilty of over using it. So, that would lead to me using conditioner all over my hair; including my scalp and ends.

What is Conditioner Used For?

To break it down, conditioner is basically like moisturizer, but instead of being used on your face, it’s used for your hair (read about my skincare here!). Conditioner helps restore moisture to your scalp and ends and basically adds oils as well (hence, the soft feeling!). Thus, conditioner doesn’t need to be used super often, in excess, nor, does it need to be used directly on your roots because that’s where all of the oils are produced! Conditioner does in fact make your hair really shiny and soft, but, it makes your hair get oilier much quicker. When I found this out, it totally led to some major trust issues. I mean, how could a step in my hair hair care routine that I love SO much, betray me like that?! (I’m kidding but also.. not really).

How to Use Conditioner the Right Way!

Now going back to my hairdresser’s advice on how to get rid of oily hair! She told me that to preserve my hair health and to also extend time in between my washes, don’t apply conditioner to your roots! Now for my technique: I wash my hair with shampoo (scalp, roots, ends, the whole shabang). Then, I rinse and follow with conditioner. However, I only apply the conditioner from my mid-hair to the ends. I focus some extra attention on my ends to smooth them out and on the rest of my hair to keep it nice and shiny as well as smooth. By doing this, you are hydrating your hair in areas where it’s most necessary and avoiding the roots from getting weighed down.

A quick note, although it seems like I’m kind of bashing on conditioner, I’m definitely not! Conditioner adds nutrients and shine to your hair and once again, it makes your hair super smooth as well. So, it’s still VERY loved and very needed; however, this post is just a secret to update the way you’ve been using it!

How to Get Rid of Oily Hair: Conditioner Final Thoughts

If you are trying to extend time between washes, and don’t want your hair to feel greasy, use this technique! Wash your hair with shampoo as you normally do, however, change it up when you use your conditioner. When it comes to the conditioner, apply it from your mid-hair length to your ends (avoiding your roots!) Ever since I started to use this technique, I’ve been able to wash my hair only twice a week!! For me, that is just completely SHOCKING and such an improvement! As I mentioned in the beginning, I would literally wash it every other day and sometimes even every day, but now, twice a week is good. I can’t even believe that’s my reality now! This technique has led my hair to be clean, not greasy, healthy, and just overall much better! I HIGHLY recommend trying this technique next time you’re washing your hair. I hope you’ll love it as much as I do.

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I have oily skin. I’ve always had oily skin and I feel that Florida weather doesn’t do it any justice whatsoever. Having oily skin, I hated how after a few hours into the day my makeup would start looking greasy and look as though it’s just melting off of my face. After those few hours passed, I would look like a straight-up oil slick. In order to combat that, I started using super magnifying touch-up powders throughout the day and blotting sheets. Sure, those worked, but it was just still so annoying how after a few hours my face would just be so oily and I had to do extra touch-ups. Those were basically all temporary solutions to a problem that I was hoping wouldn’t become permanent.

I started doing tons of research; stumbling upon the standard solutions and trying them all. No moisturizer in the morning before makeup, mattifying primers, mattifying foundations, I’ve tried basically all of it. Mattifying primers and foundations work but after a few hours, the oils would just start peeking through my makeup.

“Oily Skin is just SO frustrating!”

UNTIL! One day, I tried a hack that just changed my makeup game completely. I know it seems dramatic, but honestly, I am so sure of this hack and I can assure you it works. Before using this technique, I wouldn’t be able to go 2 hours without any touch ups, but now, I can go up to 8 hours without even a trace of oil on my face! HOW AMAZING?!

Are you ready for this SIMPLE way to change your makeup?! To make it last ALL DAY with NO SHINE?!? (I’m so excited to share this tip!) It may seem a little odd at first, but trust me, it’s revolutionary for any of us that have oily skin and need a little extra help throughout the day. Okay, enough hype and rambling, it’s time to transform your makeup game!

Steps to Reduce and Maintain Oily Skin

Step 1:

When I do my makeup, my first step is always a primer. It was definitely a step that I used to skip before, but now I can’t go a day without it. There’s many primers out there with each one catering to your specific needs. Since I have oily skin, I tend to gravitate toward the mattifying primers and pore minimizing ones as my base before my foundation.

Step 2:

Next, after I apply my primer I take my damp beauty blender and dip it into my loose powder. After getting a good amount of loose powder on the sponge, I tap it all over my face. Yes, right over my primer! I apply it over my entire face, forehead, basically everywhere. I add a good amount but definitely not too much. One way to tell that you applied enough powder in this step is to touch your face when you’re done applying it and it should feel like soft velvet. You’ll know you applied too much powder if you can feel it coming off when you touch your face! Your skin should literally feel like a thin layer of smooth velvet.

Step 3:

Once you have your layer of loose powder applied all over your primer, apply your favorite foundation and concealer! Then, set your makeup as normal, and your base is good to go for the entire day. Yes, I really do mean ALL DAY.

The beauty of this step cannot be described in words, but, I’m going to try. First, let’s start with the most obvious. This two second step makes your entire makeup last all day! There’s no need to even take any blotting powder with you anywhere you go, because your face will just be shine and oil-free. You don’t have to worry about checking the mirrors to see if your face looks good, because it will! The loose powder acts as a a barrier so that the oil can’t seep through it, working wonders underneath your foundation.

Another beautiful part of this step is that your foundation options are ENDLESS! You’re not limited to only using matte foundations and steering clear of illuminating ones. You can truly use any foundation that you choose! No need for any extra hassle finding a specific foundation that won’t make your skin oily all day.

“It’s Revolutionary!”

Sounds too good to be true right? Well honestly, it is! It’s wild to me how such a simple step in my makeup routine can just change my entire day. I can assure you that it works because I used to go to work and constantly take either touch up powder or blotting sheets to fix any issues throughout the day. AND! I always used a foundation that catered toward people with oily skin (which still ended up getting oily on me throughout the day).

Now, with this hack, I can even use an illuminating foundation that will give me a healthy dewy glow, all without becoming an oil slick! Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could wear an illuminating foundation without looking like I dipped my face into a tub of oil. But, we’ve made it to that day!

I hope you guys like this little makeup hack to make your makeup last all day, shine-free! It’s such a game-changer that has transformed my makeup ever since I started to use this technique! If I know I’m going to an event or to a place where I need my makeup flawless for the entire day, this is the trick that gets me through it all.
